We’ve come a long way baby, and this is just the beginning.

Here I am. Right back where I started when I was lost in a sea of laundry, dishes and diapers. Desperate to find a way to finally get accountable to my homemaking, or to be honest, total lack thereof. I had read a lot about habit forming (because of course, one must research before taking any action, such as, say folding a shirt..) and popular studies agreed that having something or someone to hold you accountable is one of the best ways to help nurture new habits. But where on earth was I going to find a housekeeping accountability partner?? If I asked a friend, it would mean admitting to a friend that I was a complete slob, and my ego just couldn’t take that. I could pay someone, like a life coach, to check in with me regularly and cheer me on as I dusted my baseboards and vacuumed dust bunnies… but I decided if I was going to pay someone to cheer me while I clean my house, I would rather just pay someone to clean my house. Cut out the middleman you know? So I decided to start a blog.

This blog was going to be the greatest blog ever. I was going to find like-minded moms who had the same struggles as me and we would bond over which dusting mitt was the best and what ratio of vinegar to water we would use in our DIY cleaning sprays.

I set it up, sat down to write, got two sentences in and quit. Yep, I quit. After two sentences!! I just couldn’t muster up the enthusiasm to blog about cleaning! Where on earth would I even start. And that is when it hit me. I love being on camera, and I can talk for hours, why not start a vlog. After all, I was first inspired to find a cleaning system after watching Jen from ‘How Jen does it’ and Diane from ‘Diane in Denmark’ whip through their daily routines with ease and grace. THAT COULD BE ME!! And ‘The Secret Slob’ Channel was born.

Now two years later, that little channel has helped me find my way through letting go of perfection and embracing every little bit of progress I make. As an incredible bonus, the most incredible, positive, uplifting and supportive group of people has formed around the channel and became what I affectionately refer to as ‘the most positive corner of the internet’. If you have ever watched a video, commented positive words of encouragement, , passed the channel along to an overwhelmed mom, or cheered on a fellow secret slob, thank you. From the very bottom of my heart, thank you. The Secret Slob channel saved me from a life of stress and overwhelm and every day I get messages from people who it has helped in exactly the same way.

And now, the story continues. The blog is back! I have so many ideas, resources, picture and of course, FREE PRINTABLES that I want to share with my awesome community, and this is where it is all going to happen. I will still keep up my YouTube channel, vlogging is my first love after all, but I am so so so excited to open up this page and really build a place where we can meet and share all of the ideas that make our lives simpler and more joyful.

Welcome to the Secret Slob blog, I do hope you will stay a while.

Steph

  1. Hello Steph,
I have been following you from the start. You have done amazing well for yourself and me who at 67 still struggled with routines until you set me on the tight track. Thank you so much.
My question is how do I find your vlog?

  2. This is awesome Steph!! I’m a 50-something who has never embraced cleaning and for the last 14 years I’ve paid someone else to do it. We recently relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC and instead of looking for a new service I decided I would follow you and dive in to cleaning my own home. It’s been a fit of starts & stops, and it’s still very much a work in progress but I’m getting better and that’s what I’m hanging on to right now πŸ™‚ Thank you so much for sharing all your trials, trips and tricks ❀

    1. Ah thank you so much Diane! It still feels so surreal sometimes when I think back to the mess I was in and watching you on youtube with my mum for the first time. A lightbulb went off in my head and for the first time EVER, I knew there was hope for me. Thank you for inspiring everyone so so much. ❀ ❀

  3. Way to go! So proud to see another young mom BC’er take the stage πŸ’πŸ’. Signed up for the 21 Babysteps. Coming up to 3 years doing Flylady but NEVER did a paper control journal. Did the FlyLadyPlus app but no one else (DH) could see what was next on the list. Printed out your weekly β€œto do”. House is pretty neat and love the calm feeling I have. So funny as I still get a little panicked when folks (were) coming over. Super ready for everyone now πŸ˜‚πŸ’πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈβœ…

  5. I’m happy to be here Steph, well done.

I like the idea of a baby steps accountability group too. I was only thinking a couple days ago it might be time to do a baby steps refresher and yours is my favourite.

  8. Just wanted to say thank you. I found your YouTube channel about a week and a half ago. My kitchen went from not being able to see my counters to a complete declutter and reorganize project in the kitchen. I am watching your videos each morning to give me a boost of motivation and I love that your videos have the feel of a friend hanging out – it makes me feel like i xan get it done too. So, thanks for the videos, the fb posts and now the blog. I’m going to join in on your 21 days group too. (Sorry this is SO long!)

  12. I am SO excited to read your blog. I have been following you on you tube for quite a few months and LOVED that you started from chaos. I also love Diane in Denmark, and find her so bubbly, light and reassuring (that no, I won’t drown in my clutter, but I do need to get off my backside), and it is reassuring to hear that she too started from a not so organised place, but she is so SUPER organised now…that I just needed the reassurance from someone who struggled as much as I struggle. Enter “The Secret Slob”. Thank you for letting others into your world, the positive energy and showing us the RESULTS that prove that we will get there…if we just take one step at a time.

  15. I am so happy that you are blogging. You Tube videos (and I’ve watched many of yours) are very nice but they are too time consuming for me. It is much easier for me to read a blog post than to commit to a video. Thanks

  16. Way to go! I don’t know how I found you on YouTube but so glad I did. I am a 50 year empty nest momma who wishes she had these routines when my adult kids were babies! Thank you for your videos! They inspire me daily! I appreciate your honest approach! Best wishes to you and your family!

  17. Yay for the printables! πŸ™‚ I love your videos (I’m Dawn B when commenting there) and I especially love how you tell your story in a way that somehow makes me able to adapt everything for my own story. Right now things are so different, and my Flylady routines have held me together at certain points in this Coronavirustime. But I also know that when things get back to “normal,” it’s likely I will need to refresh my routines, so I just printed the 21 day baby step checklist to keep in a safe place until I need it. πŸ™‚ Keep up the good work, Steph. You are a positive influence on us all!!!

  18. Dear Steph,
I find your channel so inspiring. I have just started with the babysteps according to your plan, after watching all your videos. I also watched some others, but as I come from a perfect (or at least it felt perfect) clean home, where my mom seemed to slave to keep everything clean and never did anything fun for her (not even go to church on Sunday because she had too much to do), I am a slob, because I had not wanted to miss out on life and I never learned from her. So thank you for being the one who shows what is possible, but also that there are setbacks or new starts. I find this much more helpful than watching perfect homes, because the people as great as they are have already managed the difficult step. I try as hard as you to get on track.
    thanks again,
    Juliane

  19. Steph- feel like you’re a girlfriend from down the street! Love the printables, love the encouragement, love the “realness” ( is that a word?), love that I feel like I’m cleaning with a friend!!! Thanks ever so much for all your time, effort, and care that you’ve put into your channel and blog for the rest of us !!

  20. Congratulations on starting your blog! I found you about a year ago on You Tube when I was searching for some type of miracle to help me get my house under control once and for all. I adored your videos, your family and you. In my enthusiasm, I jumped “all in”. Well, we both know what happened next…I immediately got overwhelmed and quit. Fast forward to present day, and I am ready to dive in again, but this time it will be the right way. Little by little and allowing progress, not perfection. I joined the FB group and will begin the Baby Steps on 9/1, and I promised myself this time I will follow it the way it is meant to be followed. Baby Steps, Routines, Weekly Focus and then Zone Cleaning.
Thank you for doing all you do and creating the vlog and now blog, so many people find their way to you and get the help they were looking for!!!
